Established in 1594, Binondo is known to be the world’s oldest Chinatown. The bustling district tells more than Chinese cuisine and red lanterns but also narrates a remarkable history.
Binondo become the hub of Chinese immigrants (Sangleys) who were settled by Governor Luis Pérez Dasmariñas. By the late 19th century, it had grown to be the center of commercial business and financing where traders and merchants thrived. Culture and customs from the fuzzy streets of Escolta, Divisoria, Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz, and Ongpin, had a vibrant influence on the way of living we have now.
Up to this day, Binondo has been instilling the legacy it upheld despite the modernization. Today, it is now the home Filipino-Chinese community who are continuing their businesses.
